Bio: Born in Poland, Iga Koncka is a feminist artist and philosopher. She holds a BA in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales and an MA in Contemporary Photography: Practices and Philosophies from Central Saint Martins. Her work explores the relationship between love and violence, as well as the intersections of private and public life and political and everyday concerns. Influenced by her Slavic roots and international experiences, she works across text, textiles, performance, sculpture, print, and video. Her mixed-media practice embraces diverse materials and a postmodern approach to image-making, often using critical play and joyful irony.
Artist Statement: My practice is informed by feminist thought, political consciousness, and an ongoing investigation into the relationship between personal experience and broader social structures.
I continually return to two inseparable themes: love and violence. Rather than treating them as opposites, I approach them as intertwined forces that shape intimacy, memory, identity, and the experience of womanhood. Through my work, I examine what it means to exist critically within these conditions, exploring how care, tenderness, conflict, and resistance become embedded in bodies, relationships, and histories.
My artistic process functions as both philosophical inquiry and a living archive of everyday encounters. I collect fragments of lived experience—moments, conversations, gestures and images —and transform them into works that reflect the complexities of contemporary existence. These archives are not objective records but emotional, embodied, and subjective mappings of the world. They emerge from the dialogue between the present moment and inherited forms of knowledge carried through family narratives, digital realities, and cultural representation.
The ideas of rhizomatic and nomadic belonging are central to my thinking. Rather than understanding identity as fixed or singular, I see it as fluid, continually shaped through movement, relationships, and intersecting international influences. This perspective informs both the form and content of my practice, allowing disparate narratives to converge across time and place.
I am particularly interested in the temporality of experience and the challenge of giving form to what is fleeting. Working across photography, text, and other visual media, I seek ways of acknowledging the instability of memory and the impossibility of fully preserving a moment. Instead, I create spaces where traces, absences, and emotional residues can coexist. Influenced by postmodern cultures of image production and consumption, I approach both images and language as sites of negotiation, questioning how meaning is constructed, circulated, and experienced.
Through image, text, and material experimentation, I invite viewers into spaces where personal experience intersects with collective mind. I believe poetry resides in the everyday, and I strive to create works that retain its quiet power while opening possibilities for dialogue, intimacy, and critical reflection.
